Newark, NJ, 9/4/2008: Today an immigration judge issued a sixty nine page verdict in which he agreed that Imam Mohammad Qatanani, spiritual leader on the Islamic Center of Passaic County since 1996, can legally and permanently stay in the United States along with his family. This important decision concludes years of bureaucratic haggling and legal arguments brought by the United State’s government as to the eligibility of the Imam to remain in the United States.
The judge’s favorable decision is a victory not only for the Imam, his family and supporters; but a joyous moment for all Americans of good will. The Imam and his supporters have always put their limitless faith in the neutrality and fairness of our legal system. Our trust in the judicial system has been vindicated.
We extend our hands and open our hearts to everyone to join us as we continue to build more bridges of friendships, mutual understanding and good will. People from all backgrounds, ethnic political and religious; have championed the just cause of the Imam because they believed he is good for America and the world.
The work and ambitions of the Imam will require a more sustained effort by all. The leadership examples he has set demand that we forge new relationship with our government agencies, especially law enforcement, with whom more must be done to construct a new relationship built on trust and accountability.
The Imam and his supporters wish to thank all those who have stood firm during the past years of untold difficulties. This is a great day for America and we pray only better ones await us all. Much more needs to be done and to a better and a peaceful world we remain committed.
