"Why Bush Hates the Palestinians," Aref ASSAF Daily Record, May 27, 2004
While our government’s abstention at the UN Security Council vote condemning
Israel for its atrocities in Gaza is a welcome stance, we should not see this
position as a departure from decades’ old one-sided and pro Israel foreign
policy. One wonders why President Bush has not yet strongly condemned Israel’s
actions against Palestinian civilians.
Is it possible that our President sees the Palestinians people as devoid of
human or moral values? does he perhaps consider their continued suffering as an
acceptable sacrifice to secure Israel’s supremacy?
How can Mr. Bush continue to claim the higher moral calling of a devout
Christian when he allows Israel to continue with its collective punishment of an
entire population rendering thousands of them homeless? Isn’t bordering on moral
bankruptcy when the only reaction our President has is that he is ‘troubled’ by
the destruction of hundred of homes and mass killing of Palestinians?
What is wrong with our country? We spare no effort to expose and criticize our
own failings but shiver at condemning Israel's savage treatment of the
Palestinians. How is peace possible when Sharon and the Israeli army continue to
violate international law on a daily basis? How can we continue to finance- to
the tune of $4 billion annually- Israel’s brutal occupation and in the same
instance tell the Arab and Muslim world that we are a neutral mediator in the
conflict?
What Israel has been committing is nothing less than war crimes and our
President must immediately stop any further aid to the Israel and demand
immediate withdrawal from all the lands it illegally occupied since 1967.
Our President constantly reminds us of his goal to "win the hearts and minds" of
Muslims and Arabs. Unfortunately, America’s slavishly pro-Israel policies are
directly threatening our image and interests.
Sincerely,
Aref Assaf
