"Impeding Effort of good Candidate," Aref Assaf, Bergen Record, 04-04-05 Regarding "Money talks" Editorial April l1, 2005:
Why is it disingenuous for Senator Jon Corzine, D-NJ., to criticize
opponents who have maligned his financial contributions to the Democratic
Party?
Now that we finally have a most qualified candidate to run the state, someone
willing to spend his own wealth to do public good, the Record seems to
want to deny us the opportunity of a lifetime.
We often complain that citizens ultimately vote for the lesser evil when it
comes to high public office. This perception has lead to unacceptable political
apathy and fatalism. It has also kept many qualified business and professional
leaders from seeking public offices.
New Jerseyans now have the rare opportunity to vote for someone with deep
convictions about serving without much desire to amass fortunes or power. He
advocates massive revamping of our tarnished state government and he will soon
flush out his plan to make NJ the envy of the nation. Special interest groups
will have to find another place from which to influence our state government.
His crowing achievement in private life will yield tremendous dividends if he is
elected our next governor. Corzine is the best man for New Jersey.
