Dear Editor:
There is much doubt that Ariel Sharon has any intention of carrying out the plan
to dismantle settlements in Gaza. However, such a withdrawal won't bring peace
unless a comprehensive agreement is negotiated. Sharon's true intent is to
divert attention from scandals surrounding his last election campaign.
Undoubtedly, opposition will be intense even though a solid majority of Israelis
favor dismantling settlements. Steps toward withdrawal could justify Labor's
return to Sharon's government. This would break the hold far- right parties have
on him. His dealings with the United States are seriously complicated by the
threat that their bolting the government would bring it down.
What is not publicized is the plan to destroy evacuated illegal settlements
instead of possibly permitting Palestinian refugees to use the homes and
infrastructure. Since our tax money is going to help Israeli settlers move back
to Israel, why not offer aid with the condition that settlements be turned over
to Palestinians who were expelled and whose homes and farmlands were
expropriated to make room for Israelis?
