Update on the
Rockaway, NJ, Islamic Center:
July 10, 2007
The Daily Record, Morris County's largest newspaper came out on
Sunday July 8, 2007 with a lead editorial supporting the plans of
our community to convert an empty warehouse into a place of worship.
The endorsement is was based on the fact that religious institutions
are tax exempt and those who may object to their presence on
this basis will not succeed. Legal precedents are ample to support
the mosque group.
The endorsement is most welcome and we hope you will thank them too.

About three weeks ago, I had a phone conversation with the Record's
Editorial Page Editor, Mr. Fred Snowflack. The conversation was
about our ongoing mutual relationship for I write op-ed pieces in
the paper. I raised the issue of the mosque plans and explained to
Mr. Snowflack the potential for controversy and urged neutral if not
positive coverage of our views. To his credit, Mr. Snowflack,
'warned me that the paper will thoroughly investigate the
matter and its views will based on the merits of case. We
could not ask for anything more that a fair judgment. Not only did the Record publish two
front page stories on the subject but they also set the tone for
future discussions on the matter by editorializing their support.
This is one example of how we can impact our community positively by
framing the variables of the ensuing discussion. The Board of
Adjustment which will decide the fate of the mosque application will
be hard pressed to reject our reasonable and practical request. The
public outcry is another issue. AA
